Moving to The Netherlands

Moving abroad can be quite challenging, especially when it's your first time (far) from home. In this blog, we will discuss everything you need to know before moving to the Netherlands!

Your bags are packed, or to be packed; you are ready to embark on the journey of moving to another country, and that can be quite overwhelming, but it also brings excitement, confusion and we bet it has a whole bunch of “I-have-no-idea-what-I’m-doing” moments. But we at Mobeco have your back, so let’s dive into the most important things to know!

First things first; do you need a visa and/or a residence permit? If you’re from the EU or you have a dual citizenship, you can probably skip this step and avoid the headache of paperwork. But, to make it easier for those outside of the EU; we will make sure you’re legally covered and ready to work in The Netherlands! Let us take care of the bureaucratic maze.

While we’re speaking of bureaucracy, once you plan to stay in The Netherlands for longer than four months, you’ll need a Burger Service Number (BSN). After we do the house hunting for you, and you’ve successfully registered yourself with the municipality, the BSN is automatically granted!

Finding a home in the Netherlands can be a little bit like searching for a needle in the haystack, especially when you can’t physically attend open houses, that’s why Mobeco will scour the housing market, gather all the necessary information, and present you with potential homes and you’ll know where you’re heading to and what your monthly costs will be.

And no need to wrestle with public transportation, we got you covered! Mobeco will make sure there is someone to pick you up from the airport and bring you to your new condo.

So, right now you got the legal right to stay in the Netherlands, you got a house and a BSN-number, fourth on your list is health! The Netherlands has a high-quality health system. Mobeco will provide expert advice to help you choose the best insurance policy for your needs.

And, since we’re talking about money, let’s talk about the hard earned money. You’ll need a banking account to watch those euros appear on your account every month. Bring a valid ID, proof of residency and the BSN, we will help you choose the perfect banking for you!

Money matters, and that's why we can't forget to inform you about the 30% ruling. If you meet the requirements set by the Dutch government, you can enjoy this tax advantage. We'll ensure that everything is set into motion, so you can have a little extra in your pockets. Treat yourself to a round of bitterballen or an extra stroopwafel!

To make your transition smoother than learning how to ride a bike, it’s beneficial to integrate yourself into Dutch society. Learn about the traditions, and get involved with social activities. Don’t be afraid to step outside and talk with fellow expats or your neighbors, maybe learn some Dutch along the way. Whilst most Dutch people speak English, learning the basics of Dutch can help you with the daily things in life.
