How to spend your day off, but make it a maritime edition.
There are several maritime-related activities you can enjoy on your days off, and in this blog, we will make it maritime-related, so you can explore your field of work completely!
We will start in our capital, Amsterdam. If you’re interested in the rich maritime history of The Netherlands, the National Maritime Museum (Scheepsvaartmuseum) is a good option. You can explore the exhibits and even board a replica of a Dutch East India Company Ship.
Going a little south, to Rotterdam, the harbor city of The Netherlands. This city offers one of the largest ports in the world, the Port of Rotterdam, and these offer you a fascinating insight into maritime commerce.
Also in Rotterdam, you have the Maritime Quarter, which is home to several maritime-related attractions. You can explore the Museum Rotterdam ‘40-’45 NU, the Historic Ships Museum, and the Maritime Museum Harbour with its collection of historic vessels.
To stay in the museums, the ZuiderzeeMuseum in Enkhuizen is an open-air museum that focuses itself on the culture and the history of the former Zuiderzee region. Explore the traditional Dutch fishing villages and discover the maritime traditions of the area.
If you’re more into sailing, the Frisian lakes and the Ijsselmeer offer beautiful waterways and sailing options. Further to the northern part of the Netherlands, you can sail around the Wadden Sea, and the southern part of the Netherlands the province Zeeland offers beautiful locations to go sailing.
And lastly, maritime events are a thing! The Netherlands hosts various maritime festivals throughout the year. Their biggest festival is Sail Amsterdam, which is a grand event that takes place every 5 years. Next one is in 2025, in which they will host their 10th edition.
