Seals
Around the Dutch coasts are two species of seals commonly found. The ‘Common Seal’ and the ‘Grey Seal’. Both of them play a vital role in the North Sea ecosystem. The common seal is frequently seen basking on sandbanks and can be identified by their distinctive spotted coats and large eyes. On the other hand, the grey seal, is larger and can be identified by their elongated noses and powerful physiques.
Fish, Crustaceans, and Invertebrates
The North Sea is home to a myriad of different fish species. Cod, herring, salmon, and more swim around and are vital to the local fishing industry and the marine food web.
The fish share their home grounds with a vibrant array of crabs and lobsters. From diminutive hermit crabs to European lobsters, they ensure that the underwater palette is full of colors and patterns.
Next to fish and crustaceans, the invertebrates like the brown crab, sea anemones, and the mussel beds are part of a strong marine organism. Fish and Invertebrates not only provide a habitat for various marine life, but also a culinary delight.
The Dutch have a tradition of fishing. When visiting one of the coastal towns, local markets, or seaside restaurants, you can expect the freshest catch. Read here about the culinary delights.
Sea Stars
The sea stars in the North Sea range from the common starfish, with five arms and a sandy color, to the sunstar, which can have up to twelve arms and have orange and red shades. These starshaped wonders are the jewels of the sea bed, being a wonderful underwater decoration.
The Basking Shark
The gentle giant of the North Sea. Their size might fool you because even though they are formidable, the creatures are as harmless as they come. They filter plankton from the water, gliding through the water with their mouth wide open.
Jellyfish
Be mindful when you encounter one while swimming; though they look delicate, they still are able to sting. The moon jellyfish is a common sight in the North Sea drifting through the waters. These gelatinous creatures have translucent bodies and long tentacles and have a pulsating bell while moving with the currents.
Dolphins
Although they are not as commonly sighted as in other waters, dolphins make their presence known off the Dutch coast. The most known species, the bottlenose dolphin, has a friendly demeanor and is highly intelligent. They are known for their acrobatic displays and for riding out the bow of waves of boats.
The species that is more common in the North Sea, is the white-beaked dolphin. True to its name, this dolphin has a distinctive white or light grey beak. They have an energetic nature and are often seen breaching and splashing in the water. The white-beaked dolphin is social, is often found in groups, and is curious about their surroundings, sometimes even approaching boats closely.
The depths of the North Sea go much further than these popular, well-known animals. There are eels, puffins, monkfish, plaices, and much more. The underwater world is an endless source, and if you want to see it up close, take a trip to the beach and go snorkeling or diving!
